Che: Part One

Drama/History, United States/France 2008

Not available
Only available until May 30! Prototype of a liberation fighter, pop idol, T-shirt counterfeit, star of cinema - the figure of "Che" has been used for everything. However, this two-part biopic by Hollywood director Steven Soderbergh is not prepared to scratch the revolutionary myth. The story of the Cuban revolution unfolds on different time levels, with Che's 1964 visit to the United Nations in New York forming the narrative framework. The second level of the film moves into the narrative of the uprising, beginning with the conspiratorial meeting between Guevara and Fidel Castro in Mexico and Guevara's decision to take part in the resistance struggle against Fulgencio Batista's regime - from the small battles in Cuba's mountains to the conquest of the city of Santa Clara. The biopic outlines an incomparable career from doctor from Argentina to commander and skillful military strategist to celebrated revolutionary leader and finally to minister. Steven Soderbergh, who usually works with big budgets and actors, has this time dedicated himself to "guerilla filmmaking" characterised by a handheld camera and reportage style. His film only shows the abysses of the revolt of the romantic idealist Ernesto "Che" Guevara, his responsibility for the death sentences against his opponents, to a limited extent. On the other hand, it also dispenses with the usual pathos and omits the greatest moments of triumph of the rebellion. In addition to the exciting life and struggles of Che Guevara, the film thrives on its cast with the authentic performance of Benicio del Toro. In preparation, del Toro is said to have spent seven years studying the life of Che Guevara - winning Best Actor in a Leading Role in the Cannes competition was his reward.
